10 Makeup Myths You Must Quit Believing Today!

Myth: Moisturizer Can Double as a Primer
While both moisturizer and primer feel wet on application, they are formulated for very (different) specific uses. Moisturizers are meant to penetrate your skin to nourish and hydrate it. Primers fill in fine lines and wrinkles and are meant to sit on the surface of your skin to allow makeup to glide on smoothly and prevent your makeup from creasing or ‘melting’ into your skin. -
Myth: Makeup Causes Acne Breakouts
False! Makeup doesn’t cause acne breakouts. What can ultimately cause breakouts is forgetting to wash off said makeup. Avoid clogging your pores with makeup, dirt, oil, & dead skin cells by washing your face before bed every night. Also, remember to clean your makeup brushes! Those get dirty too and can be a breeding ground for acne-causing bacteria! -
Myth: You Don’t Have to Wear Sunscreen if Your Foundation Contains SPF
Again, false. Just because your foundation contains sunscreen, it doesn’t mean you’re getting enough protection from the sun’s harmful rays. Also, you can’t increase SPF by layering on more foundation. It doesn’t work that way! Dermatologists recommend using sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30 to block out 97% of the UVB rays. -
Myth: Concealer Should Go On Before Foundation
This is sometimes a controversial topic. However, applying foundation before concealer makes more sense. Foundation evens out your skin tone and provides some coverage for dark circles and blemishes. Once you’ve applied your foundation, you’ll only need to use concealer to spot treat the areas that are less cooperative and require extra concealment. Also, just remember, concealer is meant to color-correct, so it shouldn’t match your skin tone. What you’re trying to “cover up” shall determine which concealer you should use (i.e. green concealer neutralizes red spots and blemishes, yellow concealer hides dark bluish circles under your eyes, etc.)

Myth: Your Foundation Shade Should be Matched to Your Wrist
Unfortunately, your wrists don’t usually match the skin tone of your face. Your face is exposed to the sun more often than your wrists are, so that’s a bit silly to assume they’ll be the perfect match. The best place to color match a foundation’s shade is on your face (go figure)! Test the foundation on your jaw line to make sure it blends seamlessly into your neck. -
Myth: Eyeshadow Doesn’t Expire
If you’re spending a fortune on eyeshadow palettes, make sure they are shades you use often! Eyeshadows do have an expiration date! Most eyeshadows last about 2 years. If you notice a funky smell or any discoloration, toss it! -
Myth: Smokey Eyes are Only for Nighttime
That’s just crazy talk! Smokey eye looks don’t always have to be dark (black, charcoal) and bold!
You can still achieve a smokey ‘daytime’ eye look using soft browns or rich purples. -
Myth:Pumping Your Mascara Wand Gets More Product Onto It!
Please don’t do this! Not only does it NOT WORK, it also pumps oxygen and bacteria down into your tube. This can cause your mascara to spoil faster and you risk getting an eye infection if the bacteria survive.Instead, swirl your wand around while pulling it out of the tube to get more product onto the wand. This is a much better technique – promise!

Myth: Waterproof Mascara is For Everyday Use
Think again! Waterproof mascara should only be used for special occasions (i.e. pool party, wedding, etc.). Waterproof mascara is harder to remove and can also damage your lashes through daily wear. For day-to-day use, opt for the regular water soluble mascara. -
Myth: Your Eyebrow Pencil Should Match Your Brow Color
That’s a definite no-no! Why? If your brow pencil matches your brow color, you’ll end up with a dark, harsh-looking eyebrow. Instead, choose a color that’s one or two shades lighter than your own brow color. This will give you a more subtle, natural result.
