7 Signs It’s Time to Switch Up Your Skincare Routine!

Change is hard, we get it.

It may have taken you years of trial and error to find the ‘right’ skincare products for your skin and for you to put together the ‘perfect’ skincare routine.

But as time passes, your body continues to evolve and goes through new phases. So it doesn’t really make sense to stick with the same old, same old.

You might not want to admit it, but switching up your skincare products and routine is probably long overdue!

7 Signs It’s Time to Switch Up Your Skincare Routine!

  1. Your skin is drier than the Sahara Desert!
If your skin is excessively dry, it’s time to invest in a thicker face cream; one with extra emollient properties that helps create a barrier on the surface of your skin to prevent moisture loss!

Another thing to look out for is ingredients that might be drying out your skin. Ingredients such as alcohol, benzoyl peroxide, salicylic acid, retinoids, fragrances, and preservatives can all have drying effects on your skin. Try and find formulas with the least amount of “drying” ingredients.

  2. Your face is so greasy you could fry an egg on it!
There are a number of factors that could be causing oily skin; heat, humidity, hormonal changes, excessive cleansing, and so on.
The number one myth is that people with oily skin should avoid moisturizer! What happens when your skin lacks moisture is that your sebaceous glands sometimes kick into overdrive. Your skin starts producing excess oils to replenish the loss of moisture.

The best way to keep oily skin in check is to choose products that control oil production. Choose a moisturizer that is non-comedogenic (won’t clog pores) and that contains ingredients that help control oily skin. Jojoba oil is an excellent skincare ingredient that does just that! It mimics your skin’s natural sebum so well that it will trick your skin into thinking it’s produced enough sebum. It will essentially regulate your skin’s oil production! Amazing!!

  3. Your skin is bumpy and/or pimply.
Your skin is such a complex organ! Sometimes it’s hard to pinpoint the cause or reason behind a breakout.

The first thing you need to rule out is any sensitivity or allergy to any ingredients. You want to make sure this isn’t a reactive breakout.

Next, you want to check that your skincare products are non-comedogenic. If your skin is suddenly breaking out, it’s possible that your pores are clogged.

The easiest way to find out what is causing the problem is by process of elimination. Only use one product at a time; that way you can narrow down which one might be the culprit behind your blemishes.

  4. Your skin is red & irritated.
If your skincare products are leaving your skin feeling tight, red, or irritated, it time to STOP using them immediately!

Your skin is telling you something. That something is either you are sensitive or allergic to an ingredient, or that it is being used too often.

  5. You weren’t born in the 90’s!
Aging skin is (unfortunately) another reason why it might be time to switch up your skincare routine. Your skin thins as it ages. It has different needs. You want extra moisture, extra protection, and most of all, ingredients that help restore your youthful glow!

Start implementing face creams that contain retinoic acid. Retinoic acid is great at fighting wrinkles because it increases cell turnover rate and stimulates collagen production. Also look for creams that contain hydaluronic acid. Hyaluronic acid has this amazing power of holding up to 1000 times its weight in water. It works wonders to plump up your skin & reduce the appearance of fine lines.

  6. You’re travelling.
Ever notice how your skin reacts when you’re travelling by air? The airplane’s recirculated air is moisture free, so it draw moisture from anywhere it can – and that includes your skin!! Always bring a hydrating moisturizer when you’re travelling by plane!
  7. The weather outside is changing.
As the seasons change, so should your skincare products.

In the summer, you want to use a moisturizer that keeps your skin hydrated, but doesn’t clog your pores. Opt for a lightweight moisturizer that is non-comedogenic.

In the wintertime, you want to use a cream that helps seal in your skin’s moisture. Choose a thick, emollient face cream. Also, remember to use alcohol free toner to prevent dry skin.
