Here are 8 reasons why your skin might be looking dull, plus solutions to help you get your glow back.
8 Reasons Why Your Skin Is Looking Dull
1. You’re Stressed Out!
When you’re stressed out, your cortisol levels are through the roof! And that can interfere with your skin’s ability to repair itself.
Solution: Take some ‘me time’ – whatever that may look like for you! Whether it’s working out or taking some time to meditate, it’s really important to take care of you first. Stress is not good for your skin’s health, nor your overall well-being.
2. You’re Not Getting Enough Sleep
Girl, make sure you’re getting that beauty sleep! No, it’s not an old wives tale. It’s true! When you’re getting adequate sleep, your skin can utilize this time to heal and repair itself. Sleep does affect the way your skin appears! So don’t pass that up!
Solution: Go to bed an hour earlier. You may need some time to adjust to this new sleep schedule, but your body will adapt.
3. You Live in the City
“Okay, so I live in the city – what does this have to do with my skin,” you ask?
Well, a lot, actually!
Exposure to environmental pollutants such as car exhaust emissions or second hand smoke is harmful to your skin. Polluted air causes free radical damage which breaks down collagen in your skin. Collagen is what keeps your skin looking firm and glowy!
Solution: Wash your face before bedtime to remove any harmful pollutant residue off your skin.
4. You’re Not Exfoliating
Not exfoliating is often the number one reason for dull skin! It’s crucial that you slough off that top layer of dry, dead skin to reveal the new layer of skin underneath. Build-up of dead skin cells prevents light from reflecting off your skin’s surface and results in dull-looking skin!
Solution: Use an exfoliant to peel off that outer layer of dead skin cells. Choose a gentle scrub containing sugar rather than pulverized nut shells to avoid skin irritation – especially if you have sensitive skin.
5. You’re Not Moisturizing
This may seem like a no-brainer, but if you don’t have a regular skincare regimen in place, you could be compromising your skin’s glowy appearance. It’s important to choose a hydrating day cream to ensure your skin stays quenched throughout the day.
Solution: Use a face cream that contains hyaluronic acid. Hyaluronic acid is said to hold up to 1000 times its weight in water! Now that’s hydration!!!
6. You’re Not Hydrating
Speaking of hydration…Are you consuming enough fluids? And no, coffee does not count! If you’re not getting enough water, your cells will become dehydrated and your skin will appear dull.
Solution: Drink at least 8 glasses of water per day!
7. You Have a Poor Diet
Okay, so no matter what you put on your skin, a poor diet will always reveal itself through your skin. The old adage, “you are what you eat” still rings true today!
Solution: Avoid sugar and refined foods. Eat a nutrient dense diet consisting of bright fruits and vegetables, healthy fats, lean meat, and complex carbohydrates.
8. You’re Deficient in Trace Minerals
Another reason that your skin might be looking drab or lifeless could be due to a mineral deficiency. Minerals such as iron and zinc are vital for healthy skin.
Solution: See your doctor and get your levels checked out. If you’re deficient, you can always take a supplement to bring your mineral levels up to par.
