Revealing Your Top 5 Skincare Mistakes and How You Can Fix Them
Skincare routines should be simple, right? So what could you be doing wrong? Learn what your most common skincare mistakes are and how to fix them!
Top 5 Skincare Mistakes
- Over-Washing Your Face
Of course it’s absolutely necessary to wash your face at bedtime to ensure you remove any make-up and cleanse away dirt and oil buildup from your day’s activities. However, washing in the morning is optional. If you use a harsh cleanser, you may end up stripping away your skin’s natural oil barrier. Stay away from cleansers containing foaming agents. These surfactants are not gentle on your skin. It’s important to choose a mild cleanser if you plan on washing your face more than once per day. - Doing SPF All Wrong
First of all, you MUST wear sunscreen every day (yes the sun’s rays can even do damage on a cloudy day)! And if you’re planning on spending time outside, it’s important to use a broad spectrum (UVA and UVB protection) sunscreen to ensure you are completely protected against the harmful rays. Next, make sure you wear an SPF of 30 or higher. And finally, don’t forget to reapply sunscreen every two hours. - Not Moisturizing Adequately
Oftentimes, people with oily skin will skimp out on moisturizers thinking it will only make their skin more oily. This is where they are WRONG. The reason your skin produces excess oils is because it is dehydrated. The drier your skin, the more oils it will produce. And the more oils it produces, the more you will cleanse it. See how this can become a vicious cycle? Wash less often, moisturize more and your skin’s sebum production will start regulating itself. Also try using a moisturizer containing jojoba oil (especially if you tend to have oily skin). Jojoba oil mimicks your skin’s sebum so well that your skin will slow down its own oil production. Your skin will become less oily and you’ll suffer less acne breakouts. - Neglecting Major Body Parts
Ever notice how your neck and décolletage seem to age more rapidly than your face? They are the telltale sign of how old you actually are! The reason for this is because you tend to neglect paying attention to these areas! Ensure you always, always moisturize and apply sunscreen to your neck and décolletage and your real age will remain your little secret! - Sleeping on a Cotton Pillow Case
This one is probably the most common skincare mistake. Sleeping on a cotton pillow case will cause your skin to crease because of increased friction. Silk or satin pillows are slippery; therefore your skin will not remain squished. Silk and satin pillow cases reduce skin creasing and prevent long term skin trauma that damage your collagen fibers and cause wrinkles.
