6 Skin Myths You Need to Stop Believing Right Now!
Skin Myth #1
You Must Choose Skincare Based on Your Age
FALSE
Many brands target a certain age group by convincing them that a certain face cream was made for their particular age range. The truth is, an older person can deal with the same skin issues as a younger one and vice versa. A woman who’s past her teen years can still suffer from acne, while another woman who’s in her 20’s might have dull, dry skin! It’s important to choose a product that will treat your specific skin condition and not just a cream designed for those within a certain age group.
Skin Myth #2
You’ll Stop Getting Acne Once You’re Past Your Teen Years
FALSE
Nope. Not necessarily! In fact, some people who have never had acne in their teens may develop this skin condition as an adult. Age is not a factor.
Skin Myth #3
Popping a Pimple Will Help it Heal Faster!
FALSE
Not necessarily. If not done professionally, it can actually be quite problematic. See, when you squeeze a pimple, the bacteria can get embedded deeper into your tissues and cause your skin to become infected and inflamed. It’s best to ride it out and let your body do the work naturally. If it’s really bothering you, go see a dermatologist! They have the right tools and will extract the pimple properly without risking more damage to your skin.
Skin Myth #4
If You Feel the Burn, Your Skincare Product is Working!
FALSE
If anything you put on your skin burns, please rinse your face immediately! Skincare products should not burn your skin. If you get this type of reaction, your skin is trying to tell you something; perhaps you have skin sensitivity to a particular ingredient, or perhaps it’s a formula that’s just too strong for your skin to handle. Either way, it’s not safe to use!
Skin Myth #5
If You Have Oily Skin, You Can Skip the Moisturizer!
FALSE
Absolutely not! Oily skin can sometimes even be attributed to not moisturizing enough! If you have oily skin, you’re tempted to wash it more; and the more often you wash, the more sebum your body produces. Your body’s reaction is to produce more oils when it feels that you’ve stripped it all off (it’s a self defense mechanism). So moisturizing after cleansing is necessary to let your body know your skin is okay! If your skin is moisturized, your body will not feel the need to replenish its oil supplies.
End this vicious cycle:
Oily skin > wash face > skin is parched > body produces MORE sebum = oily skin
Instead, choose this process:
Oily skin > wash face > MOISTURIZE > skin is hydrated = normal skin
Skin Myth #6
You Don’t Need Sunscreen on a Cloudy Day
FALSE
This is simply not true! The sun’s rays are just as damaging on cloudy days as they are on sunny days. And just because you can’t feel the sun’s heat beaming on your skin, doesn’t mean you aren’t harming your skin. It’s important to wear a broad spectrum (UVA & UVB protection) sunscreen every day! Sun ray damage is cumulative, so even if you don’t spend extended periods of time outside, it all adds up over a period of years. You cannot afford to take any short cuts here! Cover up, girl!!!!
