Skincare SOS: How to Pop a Pimple Safely Without Damaging Your Skin
How tempting is it to pop a pesky pimple? Well, if you’re one of those people, here are a few tips on how to properly pop pimples and avoid damaging your skin.
How to Pop a Pimple, Safely
Step 1: First things first; cleanse your skin! Hygiene is of utmost importance when it comes to pimple-popping. You want to avoid bacteria from spreading and causing infection. That means not just washing your face, but your hands too!!
Step 2: After your skin is cleansed, it is a good idea to use a warm face cloth and press it up against your pimple. The heat will open up your pores and make it easier to extract the puss.
Step 3: Use sterilized tools! If you are using a fine sewing needle or stainless steel lancet, you must disinfect it by running it through a flame (use a lighter to do this), followed by an isopropyl alcohol wipe to eliminate any residue.
Using your tool of choice (fine sewing needle or stainless steel lancet), lance your pimple. You want to do this by piercing the skin across the head of the pimple – not inwards! By lancing it horizontally across, you will end up with an entry point and an exit point, creating a sort of canal for the puss to squeeze through.
Once the skin is pierced, use 2 cotton swabs to gently squeeze the pimple. The whitehead should release without too much pressure. If nothing is comes out, the pimple is not ‘ripe’ yet. Do not press too hard. If the pimple starts weeping or bleeding, cease what you’re doing immediately. You do not want to damage the healthy skin tissue that surrounds it.
Step 4: Now that the puss has been extracted, it’s time to let the blemish dry up. Finish off by dabbing the blemish with a cotton swab that’s been soaked in isopropyl alcohol to ensure all the bacteria is cleared away.
Step 5: Avoid applying make-up for a few hours. It is best to do this procedure at nighttime so that your skin has a chance to repair itself while you sleep.
If you follow these instructions, you will enjoy a speedy recovery from those unsightly pimples.
