What is an Antioxidant?

An antioxidant is a substance that is capable of neutralizing free radicals found in your body. Free radicals are a byproduct of natural metabolic processes, however, when they are abundant, they wreak havoc inside you and create oxidative stress which causes your skin cells to age and deteriorate at a rapid rate. An antioxidant inhibits oxidation of those molecules and prevent damage to your skin.

Best Antioxidant Sources for Your Skin

  1. Vitamin E
Vitamin E (a.k.a. tocopherol) boosts collagen production and helps treat wrinkles and age spots.
Vitamin E is known to work best in conjunction with Vitamin C, so look for skincare products that include both in its formulation.
  2. Vitamin C
Vitamin C (a.k.a. L-ascorbic acid) boosts collagen formation and it is a powerful antioxidant.
Vitamin C is also great at fighting hyper pigmentation & inflammation.
  3. Lycopene
Lycopene is a carotenoid and is an amazing antioxidant.
Lycopene is easily absorbed into your skin and promotes collagen production. It slows DNA damage and prevents premature aging and wrinkles.
  4. Green Tea
Green tea contains an active compound called catechins (epigallocatechin-3 gallate or EGCG for short). These antioxidants repair damage to your skin and clear up your complexion.
Green tea also protects your skin from harmful UV rays & reduces inflammation.
  5. Resveratrol
When we hear resveratrol, we often think WINE! Yes, red wine is a great source of resveratrol, as are grapes, nuts, & berries.
Resveratrol protects your skin against UVB damage. It has anti-inflammatory properties, promotes collagen production, and reduces damage to your skin cells.
  6. Coffee Berry
Coffee berry is an ingredient often found in anti-aging skincare formulas. Its ability to prevent damage to collagen fibers make it a star in many wrinkle –defense creams.
In addition, coffee berry has powerful anti-inflammatory properties.
  7. Grape Seed
Grape seed belongs to the flavonoid family. Its antioxidant properties are potent and have proven to be more effective at scavenging free radicals than both Vitamins C & E!
  8. Niacinamide
Niacinamide (a.k.a. vitamin B3) is another wonderful antioxidant also exhibiting anti-inflammatory properties.
Niacinamide acts as a vasodilator, which increases blood flow and improves your skin’s tone and texture.
  9. Retinol
Retinol (term used for the entire Vitamin A molecule) increases collagen production.
Retinol also assists in the production of various other substances that support healthy skin. Using skincare products containing this ingredient results in firmer skin, improved texture, and enhanced barrier function.
  10. Coenzyme Q10
Coenzyme Q10 is a natural antioxidant found in your body. It enhances the ability to produce collagen and elastin which are both necessary to maintain smooth, supple skin.
